The Marseille bar brings the sunny south of France to Rockaway, especially in the fabulous âArverne by the Seaâ district. This chic, fresh and airy French bistro offers sea and dune views from its expansive rooftop terrace, while the first-floor patio and beach-inspired dining room will make you feel like you’re in. Le Bar Marseille offers a refined gastronomic experience at reasonable prices without pretension or fuss. It’s a beach town, after all, so the dress is casual and families are welcome. Friendly restaurateur James Mallios manages several successful restaurants in New York City and his team of experts guarantee a unique dining experience. Chef Nicholas Morales performs traditional Marseille dishes (Mar-SAY) while Danny, the gracious manager and beverage director, oversees the excellent service.
Stunning photos on their website showcase sleek whitewashed wood banquettes, white chairs, and an inviting bar topped in driftwood-colored marble lit by white wicker pendants. All outdoor decks are furnished with white rattan sofas and chairs with cushions and pillows that invite you to stay, sip, eat, and relax with friends and families. Best of all, the roof terrace is accessible by lift from the dining room. Live music fills the air on Wednesday and Friday evenings, adding to the sultry vibe.
Signature cocktails include âMonte Carlo Nightsâ with Grand Marnier, âMagic in the Moonlightâ mixed with gin and a spicy tequila drink called âFleur Epiceeâ. Of course, there is a nice selection of fine wines from France, Italy, Spain and imported beers to enjoy at the bar or at your table.
Start with their divine crispy artichokes to share served with traditional aioli to complement the tender, sweet veg ($ 14). I love snails and these tender gastropods swim in a butter and garlic sauce just begging to be soaked in the crispy baguette that accompanies them. The chicken kebabs are marinated in a North African sauce called “Chermoula” for a succulent texture and flavor, served with homemade hummus. The steak tartare melts on the tongue while the shrimp cocktail is plump and juicy, dipped in a cocktail sauce. Share a charcuterie platter of cold cuts, wholemeal mustard and pickles, or a cheese platter to start your meal. All entryways are generously sized and ideal for sharing.
The salads at Bar Marseille are hearty enough for a meal with a classic ‘Nicoise’ layered with seared ahi tuna, tomatoes, eggs, olives and potatoes, or a vibrant heirloom tomato salad. My adorable companion’s tomato and brie sandwich was stacked on a crispy baguette with arugula and balsamic vinaigrette and was rated “delicious”.
The Chef prepares all the main courses to order and sets them beautifully on crisp white, still steaming plates. Provencal roast chicken is the perfect comfort food and we could all use some comfort these days with this juicy, natural chicken, roasted and served in its own juice that soaks in the bed of crispy fingerling potatoes and toast ($ 28). The steak frites are as good as any I’ve had in France, served with caper aioli, cabernet butter and sublimely addicting fries. Bouillabaisse is a beautiful and tasty blend of mussels, flaky cod, shrimp and fennel in a saffron-infused broth that you will soak up with delight. You will do the same with the aromatic broth that goes into the fresh mussels called Moules frites. The Branzino almond is perfectly seared and served with brown butter, parsley and green beans. The tagliatelle ribbons are prepared with a truffle cream sauce and a pinch of fine Parmesan. Make sure to order a glass or bottle of wine to go with your meal, and Danny can help if needed.
Our friendly waiter presented us with a plate of colorful macaroons as well as a generous piece of homemade lemon olive oil cake drizzled with lavender honey. Another dessert option is the chocolate creme jar and yes, there are after dinner syrups and sturdy coffee and tea to put a ribbon on your delicious meal.
The Marseille Bar is open from Tuesday to Thursday for dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and until 10 p.m. on weekends. The bar stays open later for your enjoyment with a nice bar menu. A delicious seaside brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by dinner service at 5 p.m. Le Bar Marseille invites you to enjoy the Oyster Happy Hour at the bar from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. where you can sip French wine and sip fresh and brackish oysters. Don’t forget the live music Wednesday and Friday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
