Ligue 1: Lens and Nice lose, Marseille supporters pay tribute to Tapie | Football news

Second, Lens, lost 1-0 in Montpellier on Sunday and fell nine points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain after 10 matches.

Montpellier dominated the first half and the pressure kicked in moments after the break when England striker Stephy Mavididi scored on an irrepressible pass from Teji Savanier.

Forward Valère Germain hit the post for Montpellier early on after grabbing a nice pass from the skillful playmaker Savanier, who was in great shape throughout and pushing for a first call-up for the France national team.

Previously, top-flight Nice had lost 1-0 against promoted Troyes after failing to respond to a first goal from striker Mama Balde.

Defender Giulian Biancone placed Balde in the fourth minute and he shot under the crossbar.

Top scorer Amine Gouiri entered the second half for Nice after scoring midweek for the France Under-21 side and looked like a threat.

The defeat leaves the team of coach Christophe Galtier in third place but still two points behind Lens, while Troyes leaves the relegation zone.

It was going to be an emotional evening for Marseille supporters at home in Lorient as they paid tribute to the hugely popular former president Bernard Tapie, who passed away this month.

It was the first home game at the Stade Vélodrome since Tapie’s death on October 3.

OTHER MATCHES

Forward Gaetan Laborde continued his momentum with his seventh league-leading goal as Rennes improved 3-0 at Metz.

After playing in a well-deserved home win over PSG two weeks ago, Laborde scored midway through the first half before 19-year-old Ghana winger Kamaldeen Sulemana added a superb goal in solo and that winger Martin Terrier completes the score just before the break.

Saint-Etienne coach Claude Puel is under increasing pressure to keep his post following his side’s 5-1 loss to Strasbourg. Saint-Etienne is last and is the only team to have won yet, with the exception of Brest, 19th, who drew 1-1 at home against Reims.

South Korea striker Hwang Ui-jo scored for the Bordeaux wrestlers in a 1-1 draw at home with Nantes.

On Friday, the runaway leader of PSG needed a controversial penalty kick from striker Kylian Mbappe to secure a 2-1 win over Angers and make it nine wins in 10 games.
