Just over a week after the United States celebrated its independence, France is celebrating its own freedom. Held on July 14, July 14 commemorates the day French revolutionaries took the Bastille and sparked the start of the French Revolution. Here’s a roundup of New York’s July 14th celebrations, from the biggest festivities in Central Park to specials at French restaurants across the city.
CELEBRATIONS
14th of July celebration in Central Park
After a successful first year, the Consulate General of France in New York is hosting a celebration of French culture with live theatre, music and dance in Central Park. This year’s celebration will begin with the opening speeches of the Consul General of France in NY Jérémie Robert and the President of the Francophone Societies of NY Gérard Epelbaum. Performers on this year’s show include Virgil Boutellis, Adam Leites and Daniel Rafimayeri, China Moses, DeLaruentis and DJ Joachim Garraud. The celebration begins at 6 p.m. on July 14 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Admission is free and the full program is available here.
FIAF July 14 Celebration
For more than 20 years, the French Institute: Alliance Française has organized its own July 14 celebration in New York. On July 10, FIAF will host its annual event with a stacked lineup of events, performances and food and drink tastings. There will be more than 40 stands sharing the best of French cuisine and culture, a chance to win a getaway to the Occitanie region. Participants will also be able to attend a preview screening of Azure. This year’s celebration will take place on Madison Avenue, 59th to 63rd Street, from noon to 5 p.m. A full schedule can be found here.
July 14 in Jersey City

The Franco-American Academy is hosting its own July 14 celebration in Jersey City from 2-7 p.m. on the 14th. Guests can expect a fun and exciting day full of activities accompanied by French food and drink. The school will also hold an open day for parents on the same day from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Industry City “La Brooklynaise” Petanque Tournament
68 34th Street, Brooklyn
The Carreau Club is hosting the second annual “La Brooklynaise” Open Petanque Tournament on July 17 in Brooklyn’s Industry City. There will be player brackets for beginners and experienced players, with prizes awarded to the top three teams in both brackets. Those who prefer to sit and watch while enjoying French food and drink are more than welcome. Participating partners in the event include Mothershuckers who will host a raw bar, chefs Anthony Sousa and Conner Updegrave who will showcase Binchotan grills, D’Artagnan who will hand out boxes of charcuterie to tournament winners and Ricard who will serve pastis cocktails. The event will be accompanied by French music played by live DJs all night long. The tournament will begin at 11 a.m., and those wishing to participate in the event should register here.
The Greater New York Velosolëx Club annual rally and get-together
The annual parade of French automobiles and bicycles is back in New York. This year’s rally will start at 10 a.m. on July 10 at Riverside Drive and 122nd Street before crossing Manhattan. At one of the rally stops, vehicles will be parked in front of the FIAF fairground on Madison Avenue between 59th and 63rd streets for all to see. Movies on the Green 2022
Organized by the Villa Albertine, the French Embassy, the FACE Foundation and NYC Parks, Films on the Green is an annual outdoor French film festival. This year’s festival takes place in nine different parks across Manhattan and Brooklyn and runs until September 9. A full list of the festival program is available here.
